At ‘Miles Younger’ I try to take a different approach.
I tackle and fight those lifestyle factors that will actually age you as opposed to most cosmetic companies who tackle the actual signs of ageing. Basically, their products claim to help once the lines, wrinkles or grey hairs are already there. Prevention is better than cure, isn’t that what they say?
One of the things that I am evangelical about is Sun protection on your face.
It’s been well publicised and most people are aware of the damaging effects of the sun to your skin. When do you ever see some of these movie stars without a hat and dark glasses on in the sun? I’m not expecting you to go around like Joan Collins, instead there are simple things you can do like applying some sunscreen to your face and keeping your shades on to protect the delicate skin around the eyes and prevent sun damage.
Important things to be aware of when using sun protection on your face.
Make sure it has a UVA protection listed. They are the main cause of premature skin ageing as UVA rays can penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB rays. Even in your car you are at risk of sun damage as the UVA rays can also penetrate glass, so be careful when driving. It’s also the reason sun beds are so bad as they are mainly UVA rays.
Look for the UVA 5 star symbol on a men’s moisturiser, then you know it has been tested. A high SPF is important too, and not just for protecting against UVB rays, which cause the redness and burning which can lead to skin cancer. The UVA star system represents the percentage of UVA absorbed compared to the UVB factor, so the higher the UVB factor, the more effective the UVA 4 or 5 stars will be. Basically, go for the higher SPF, around 30, with a 5 star UVA if you can.
The phrases broad spectrum or UVA/UVB protection indicate some UVA protection but as there is no consensus as to how much protection these terms indicate, you need to be careful!
With Autumn underway you are probably thinking I don’t need sun protection anymore but certainly on any sunny day, even in the winter, UVA rays can penetrate the skin so try using a moisturiser that offers some protection.
Recently I met Russell, like many of us he never wore sun protection on his face growing up and hasn’t bothered with it that much since! He regrets it now. It was harder for Russel than most as he grew up in South Africa where the sun is super strong. I am going to help him improve his skin and reverse some of the damage the sun has caused. I have convinced him to start using sun protection on his face, despite the fact he says he likes the rugged look. In another 10 years, he may not be so keen. If we start some ‘Miles Younger Maintenance’ now it will make all the difference.
