Life is full of stress and those people who say they are always calm and never worry, don’t believe them! Managing our stress levels has never been more important for our wellbeing and as men we have a tendency to bottle things up, which is one of the worse things you can do.
Stress is one of the major causes of the ageing of our skin and now we know why!
As soon as we feel stressed or anxious our body produces the stress hormone Cortisol, the hormone that signals our body to prepare the flight or fight mode. One of the main ways it achieves this is to signal an increase in blood sugar. An increase in blood sugar causes glycation that damages the collagen in our skin (Find out more by clicking here). Constant stress over time will heighten this effect, ageing our skin before it’s time!
Here are 5 signs that stress is ageing you and it’s time to do something about it.
You wake in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep
You’re body is anxious and your mind is racing! You need to try and deal with whatever these issues are, simply sleeping on it does not work. All that happens is that you wake up in the middle of the night worrying and then feel tired the next day. Talk to someone, anyone, just share it. You will sleep so much better!
Have you started to worry about every tiny detail whereas in the past you may have been less bothered. Ever heard of that expression “Don’t sweat the small stuff”, well it’s true! As we get older we do tend to worry more about things that may have simply passed us by in our youth. If you find that this is causing anxiety then you need to sort it out. Prioritising things and drawing up a list can really help. It’s not a solution but really helps you to see what’s important and what isn’t when you are feeling overwhelmed.
This is a classic sign that your brain is under too much pressure. I found this out the hard way and you may have experienced this too. I went to draw some cash out and totally forgot my PIN number, the same one I had been using for the last 10 years. My brain just decided to shut down as it had had enough! It was telling me enough is enough. Forgetfulness is a classic sign that you are under too much stress.
Stress headaches are different from those centred at the front of your head between the eyes often associated with eye strain. These are like a constant thud, as if someone is slowing beating on a drum inside your head. It’s like you can feel the blood pumping around your head with every beat. These headaches are telling you to slow down-you are making yourself ill. Some would say you don’t have a choice you have to keep going and to man up. It is true that sometimes we are unable to walk away. But what we can do is manage the time when we finish work. A relaxing bath, a friendly game of sport, some quality family time. Nothing too strenuous just relax and your body will thank you for it.
Detaching from social engagements.
One of the early signs of depression is wanting to detach yourself from social engagements and fun events. This feeling of wanting to shut yourself away is directly attributable to stress. It’s a classic sign and should be a red flag for you or someone you love to do something about it!
Find your thing.
The thing that allows you to switch off and it’s different for all of us. I am not going to sit here and recommend yoga or mindfulness or playing sport or simply sitting in the sauna. It’s whatever works for you but we all need to make the effort and find it. Once you do make it part of your world and manage your stress, you will stay healthier and look younger and consequently be ready to deal with whatever the world throws at you next. Schedule it in and don’t be made to feel guilty about this. This is about you and your future. If your family or other half demands your time great, but remember you aren’t much use to them if you’re not around!
