5 Anti-ageing snacks for people on the go!

Most days when we are in a rush and on the go, it’s easy just to grab a snack. Maybe something healthy, maybe something not. I once reached for a bounty bar, claiming the coconut was one of my five a day lol! 

But beware, even the so called healthy snacks can be loaded with sugar or just plain expensive. These 5 simple anti-ageing  snacks and drinks can be carried around with you during the day and reached for in a rush. They will satisfy your snack craving whilst providing anti-ageing benefits to your skin and wellbeing whilst boosting your energy levels.

Just because we’re in a rush doesn’t mean we can’t do ourselves some good along the way.

Almonds.

Almonds are packed with hard to get vitamin E and just one small handful delivers half your daily dose. When researchers from several leading medical schools in the U.S looked at the impact of different vitamins and minerals on speed, coordination, and balance in older people, the only one that made a difference was vitamin E. People with the weakest physical performance had the lowest levels of E, whereas more agile participants had decent amounts of the vitamin in their system. Researchers reckon it works by neutralising the free radicals in both your muscles, nervous system and skin. This results in you looking and feeling younger.

Pomegranate seeds.

This seed is a rich source of antioxidants which fight against free radical damage to help prevent premature skin ageing.  The seed oil was found to stimulate the creation of keratinocytes. These are basically large cells seen in our skin’s outer layers. The results suggest pomegranate seeds promote regeneration of the surface of the skin. There is so much other research into pomegranates, including about a substance called punicic acid, an Omega 5 which may help maintain the elasticity of the skin as we age. Pomegranate seeds work really well sprinkled on your cereal or on a salad and are basically little ruby red gems!

Kefir or natural yoghurt.

Kefir is a probiotic powerhouse, a fermented milk drink that is easy to find now in the shops. Alternatively, live natural yoghurt will do the same thing. The natural bacteria they contain have been proven to keep our digestive systems healthy. We are bombarded with antibiotics in farmed meat and dairy products and this along with the routine prescription of antibiotics by doctors, depletes are good bacteria. There are so many exciting studies in relation to our gut health and ageing, so it’s important to look after it and replace the good bacteria. Please be careful with yoghurts that are loaded with sugar though. Adding honey to natural yoghurt is better, if you find the sweetness more palatable.

Green tea.

Have you heard the news about green tea and wrinkles? Green tea contains a rich anti-ageing antioxidant known as EGCG, which helps fight wrinkles by increasing cell turnover. It does this by reducing inflammation in our systems which then helps encourage the new cell turnover.  A cup a day of this wonder-stuff will really help your skin and counter the effects that stress, pollution and lack of sleep will have on it.

Blueberries.

The reason why blueberries have such a strong colour is because they are full of anthocyanin . Anthocyanin is a flavonoid which helps give blueberries their anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is the major cause of skin ageing and causes wrinkles to appear, so this is where a blueberries properties come in. I recommend a handful of blueberries every day to keep your skin looking younger.

Next time you leave the house in the morning why not take a small plastic container and add one, two, three ingredients of these and create an anti-ageing powerhouse of a snack that you can just munch on throughout the day. You’ll be doing you and your skin so many favours and it may help reduce the chances of you reaching for that sugary snack!
